New Delhi: With the April 2 deadline approaching, US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "smart man" and expressed confidence that trade discussions between India and the US would be resolved successfully.
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Trump stated, "Prime Minister Modi was here recently, and we have always shared a strong friendship."
He highlighted India’s high tariff rates, calling them "brutal," but acknowledged Modi's intelligence and leadership. "He is a very smart man and a great friend of mine. We had excellent discussions, and I believe things will work out very well between India and the US," Trump remarked.
He further added, "And I must say, you have a great Prime Minister."
Trump’s comments are significant, given his frequent criticism of India's high tariffs on American goods. Currently, officials from both nations are engaged in negotiations to finalize a trade agreement.
A US delegation, led by Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch, is in New Delhi for discussions. The negotiations are expected to conclude by Saturday.
Prime Minister Modi had visited Washington, D.C., in February for bilateral talks with Trump. His visit followed Trump’s inauguration for a second term as US President.
